Summary of the October 2018 talk by Dr Nina Bailey – Combating Nutrient Deficiencies

Outlining the current recommendations for a healthy lifestyle, research shows that we fall short of meeting recommended guidelines and how we can eat well by avoiding processed foods and selecting nutrient rich foods with a high content of vitamins, minerals and Omega 3 fatty acids for an anti-inflammatory diet. 

Looking at each individual’s activity level, age, gender, heath status and environment, and considering biological, psychological, social, economic and physical determinants. 

Modern farming methods, conflicting reports on nutritional guidance, stress and its negative impact on the digestive system were also explored.    

Some medications used to treat diabetes and associated conditions and other prescription drugs increase nutrient requirements and general advice given as to what foods and/or food supplements could help counter common deficiencies and ensure a balanced diet while mindful of dietary guidance followed by diabetics.
